Web/UX Projects

Shaw Family Cabin

The Shaw Family Cabin website was an idea I came up with for a school project. We could either come up with our own new site or prototype an existing site that we believed needed some help. I choose to prototype and apply UX design prinicples to a new website I called the Shaw Family Cabin.

My Process

Gather Information/Define Purpose

For this school assignment I started by listing out all the things I wanted this website to do. There were two main focuses. The first main focus of the site was to have a calendar where all my family members could go to reserve the family cabin, along with adding other important dates. The other main focus was to have a place where family members could quickly get information for the next years reunion. The rest of the items I had on the list were other fun resources that my family members might enjoy.

User Personas

For this project my personas were easy to come up with because it was a site specifically for my family. More specifically for those who where old enough to navigate the web and find the information on it useful. One apect of the site includes and administration access where a certain portal controls some of the other components of the site. This gave me the need of my grandparents to test my site since they would be the overall administrators.

Research/Analyze/Brainstorm

For this step most of my research was done figuring out my colors and fonts. Because this was my own product and my first time through my design process, I wasn't sure what tools my family would find most useful. I spent part of this step listing out all the aspects of the site I wanted to include.

Wireframing and Prototyping

I began this step by drawing out the layout on paper for each page of the site. After the wireframe was done I began creating my prototype in Figma. Once I finished the first prototype in Figma I did some user testing by having family members navigate through the prototype and complete five tasks. I also sent with those instructions a survey to my family members asking different questions about their experience and their ability to follow the tasks.
