Web/UX Projects

Weber State University Digital Literacy

This was my project for my internship at Weber State. My main goal was to design the website for the new Digital Literacy program they were developing. I designed two different versions of the same site which you can view below. Interaction is limited due to time restraints and lack of information I was given towards the beginning of the project.

My Process

Gather Information/Define Purpose

This project was a little difficult trying to gather information as I was working under my boss who was trying to get a meeting set up with the stakeholders (WSU Faculty and Staff). This meeting didn’t happen until way into the semester of my internship. Then even after the meeting I still had the vibe that they didn’t know where they were going with the entire project. I felt like I was running backwards trying to prepare a prototype for a website that the stakeholders weren’t even sure on what they wanted it to do. Most of my info came from my boss who was one of my instructors also. What I gathered as my purpose for this website was it was meant to be a place where my users could get help with anything related to digital literacy, whether it be help with understanding how to use a particular software program or how to get certified in a particular software program. It was also to be a place where users could access online tutorials to help them with the learning digital tools.

User Personas

My users for this website were to include WSU students, but it was also in consideration by the stakeholders to have parts of the site open to other citizens of the community. These users would be anyone from the age of 17 to 99+ (including early college students and elderly users) interested in enhancing their knowledge and skills.

Research/Analyze/Brainstorm

In this step I felt like I was working out of order. Because I didn’t have all the information, a lot of it came from researching what I had seen others do, as far as the UI was concerned. Because I knew the stakeholders wanted the website to standout, I researched different ways to do this while adding my own twist.

Wireframing and Prototyping

Because of the time I had to work on this project without any information to go off of I ended up creating two prototypes. I started off by creating a straight mock-up on this one using Figma.com's prototyping tool. This was a prototyping tool introduced to me by my instructor in one of my prototyping classes. I then took those mock-ups and converted them into a simple prototype using Figma. This gave the user somewhat of an idea on how a site will be navigated. I wasn’t able to test my prototype on any users because after I had both prototypes laid out my stakeholders ultimately decided not to do this site because they realized something similar was already in process somewhere else on campus. This was a very frustrating project but I definitely learned the value of communication throughout the entire design process.
